DIETERLIN (DIETERLE - DIETTERLIN) Wendel GRAPP called
Painter-engraver, architectural theorist (★ Pfullendorf near Constance, 1550 † Strasbourg 1599).
He painted the frescoes of the Bruderhof (Cour des Frères where Protestant canons of the Grand chapitre were housed) built in 1573 and decorated parts of the OEuvre Notre-Dame (1578-1582). He was active in Haguenau in 1583, in Oberkirch, Baden, in 1589 and again in Strasbourg, where he worked on the "Neue Bau", the Town Hall. He stayed in Stuttgart, where he created the ceiling and room decorations for the Lusthaus. There, he published the first volume of his Architectura, while the second was published after his return to Strasbourg. Dieterlin uses a classification based on the five orders: Tuscan, Doric, Ionic, Corinthian and composite. The 209 plates feature exuberant, Mannerist architectural ornamentation in the tradition of the Flamboyant Gothic and Italian Renaissance. For many years, they were the bible of decorators and cabinetmakers.
