Originally from Germany, François Reizell settled on rue Traversière in the faubourg Saint-Antoine, where he began his career. He obtained his master's degree on February 22, 1765, and moved from the cabinetmakers' district to rue des Saints-Pères. He ended his career on rue du Petit-Lion-Saint-Germain. He died in 1788. From 1770 onwards, his main client was Louis-Joseph de Bourbon, Prince de Condé and last Governor of Burgundy, to whom he supplied numerous works for the Palais-Bourbon and for his châteaux at Chantilly and Villegénis.
François Reizell left behind a wealth of high-quality furniture that reveals the true talent of this cabinetmaker. He knew how to evolve and adapt to the different styles of his time. His work is therefore very diverse, but mainly in the Louis XV and Transition styles. He uses veneers of rosewood, violet, amaranth and satinwood, inlaid with birds, landscapes or flowers in bouquets, garlands or baskets. Sometimes these decorations are a little too busy, but always composed with great taste. Floral compositions are replaced by marquetry of trophies, vases or geometric designs on his Transition style pieces, especially chests of drawers and secretaries.
