SAINTE-BEUVE - Les causeries du Lundi. Paris, Garnier Frères - Lot 1020
SAINTE-BEUVE - Les causeries du Lundi. Paris, Garnier Frères, Libraires-Editeurs, circa 1900; in-12, approx. 450 pp. per volume, bound in brown half-chagrin, 4-nerved spine, gilt edges, gilt head. All 16 volumes. Fifth edition, fine condition. French literary critic and writer, Sainte-Beuve is best known for his literary criticism, which combines biography and works. One of his greatest detractors is none other than Marcel Proust. Sainte-Beuve is also known for having criticized great writers (Baudelaire, Stendhal and Balzac among them) and praised writers who are now completely forgotten. During a duel in 1830, Sainte-Beuve exchanged four bullets with the director of the Globe, dueling with an umbrella in hand, arguing that he wanted to be killed but not wet.
