Born August 19, 1860 in Remiremont (Vosges), died 1937 in Neuilly-sur-Seine. He was a French artist, landscape painter and photographer, "the pictorial glory of Remiremont", where he frequently stayed in the house of his grandfather, the collector Charles Friry (1802-1881). He moved to Paris in the late 1870s to study under Ferdinand Humbert and Louis Français, then in the late 1880s under Alfred Roll and Henri Gervex. By 1890, he was living in Paris, at 66, rue de Lisbonne. However, he stayed regularly in Remiremont and painted many landscapes of the Vosges.
In particular, he designed the interior decor (notably marquetry and painted door-tops) of several rooms in this historic 18th-century residence, his birthplace and now a "Musée de France" museum. He set up his studio here around 1884. At the 1886 Salon de Nancy, he exhibited "L'étang de Xénois" ("The Xenois Pond").
From June 15 to September 1, 1987, the Museums of Remiremont devoted a first major retrospective exhibition to him, with 139 works on display. The catalog was produced by Roland Conilleau and Jean-Pierre Stocchetti.
In 2011, Remiremont's two museums, the Musée Charles de Bruyères and the Musée Charles-Friry, devoted a new retrospective to Pierre Waidmann, an artist in residence, featuring some one hundred works, including sixty paintings, earthenware, terracotta and bookbindings.
