André VAHL (1913-1983) - Lot 487
André VAHL (1913-1983) "LAY-ST-CHRISTOPHE". Etching. Signed lower right in the margin. Located lower left. Size: 15.5 x 11.5 cm. An engraver and watercolorist, he was born in Nancy in 1913 and died in Villers-les-Nancy in 1983. After studying at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Nancy, he practiced etching almost exclusively, a difficult technique requiring great rigor. He later became a professor at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Nancy, then Director in 1968. A discreet artist, he exhibited little and was best known to informed amateurs. He engraved a great deal on commission; the major companies of the day liked to offer their customers and deserving employees an original work of art, signed Vhal (Aciéries de Pont-à-Mousson, De Wendel, l'Est-Républicain). The artist has taken part in collective works: Paysages lorrains - La Colline inspirée - Bosserville. Bibl.: Harcos "Peintres et graveurs lorrains" (Lorraine painters and engravers) The 1984 issue of the magazine "Le Pays Lorrain" contains a long, well-documented article on the artist.
