Paul Merwart, also known as Paweł Merwart, was a Franco-Polish painter and illustrator, born on March 25, 1855 in Marianovka, Russian Empire (now in Ukraine), and died on May 8, 1902 in Saint-Pierre, Martinique. Merwart is best known for his portraits and genre scenes, often inspired by literature, the Bible and music. His style is characterized by a particular attention to detail and an ability to capture emotions through his subjects. Among his notable works are paintings such as "The Flood", which illustrates mythological and biblical themes.
His life was tragically cut short when he died during the eruption of Mont Pelée in Martinique, an event that also destroyed the town of Saint-Pierre.
