David Mesly (1918-2004), born Michel Robert, was a French sculptor renowned for his naturalistic bronze sculptures. He began his artistic career studying sculpture with his father, who was also a sculptor. Mesly honed his skills by taking drawing classes in Montparnasse, Paris, from 1932 to 1939. Over the course of his career, Mesly created a wide variety of works, notably animal sculptures, which often featured stylized forms. One of his most remarkable pieces is a bronze sculpture of a hippopotamus entitled "Isidore", which illustrates his ability to blend realism and artistic interpretation. His work has been exhibited in various galleries, including a remarkable show at the Galerie Royale in Deauville in 1999.
