Louis MATHET began his career as an apprentice with Tarbes sculptor MENVIELLE, before joining NELLI's workshop. He left Tarbes, moved to Paris and became a pupil and assistant to Auguste RODIN, whose marbles were sometimes criticized for the few he carved himself. In fact, he called on the services of practitioners to reproduce some of his works, in response to numerous commissions. Among these practitioners was Louis MATHET, who worked in his studio between 1893 and 1910, and again between 1916 and 1918. His works included La Petite fée des eaux, La Tempête, Paolo et Francesca dans les nuages, Psyché-Pomone, Le Secret and Lady Warwick.
