Paul BONIFAS (1893-1967). Black-glazed ceramic soliflore vas - Lot 105
Paul BONIFAS (1893-1967). Black-glazed ceramic soliflore vase. Dimensions: 16 x 13 cm. Paul Bonifas was a Swiss ceramist known for his work in the purist spirit of the 1920s. Born in Geneva, he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts while working as an apprentice engraver and jeweler in his father's workshop. Bonifas was particularly interested in enamel, which led him to explore glass and ceramics. In 1914, Bonifas set up his own studio near Geneva, then worked in Paris before returning to Switzerland in 1922 to buy a pottery workshop. His work is characterized by glossy black glazes and crackled whites, testifying to his mastery of ceramic techniques. Bonifas' career took him to the United States in 1945, where he taught ceramics at Washington State University. He retired in 1959 and devoted himself to his work until his death in 1967.
