DAGHESTAN (Caucasus) carpet, late 19th century Technical features: Wool velvet on wool foundation. An ivory field, highlighted with positive/negative chess pieces, hosts a sowing of multicolored floral stems, forming a honeycomb lattice. The whole supports a delicate navy mihrab with florets and geometric shapes. The frame is composed of a brick border with a succession of polychrome "double S", flanked by two navy counter-borders, opting for the same decoration as the mihrab. Two-tone highlights.
