AKSTAFA carpet (Caucasus), late 19th century. Dimensions: 295 x 131cm. Technical features: Wool velvet on wool foundation. A marine field covered with a sowing of flowers, animals, gems and various other small Caucasian symbols supports four large medallions of "Kashi" sky, ivory, brick and greenish shapes. They are adorned with stylized cruciform flowers and polychrome geometric caissons. They are interspersed with trees of life and fantastic animals, half phoenix/half dragon. Ivory main border with polychrome kotchaks. Royal blue and emerald counter-borders with a series of small "S" shapes. Two-tone highlights.
