Magnificent HÉRIZ all-silk carpet (Persia), mid-19th century - Lot 67
Magnificent HÉRIZ all-silk carpet (Persia), mid-19th century
Dimensions : 175 x 140cm.
Technical features: Silk velvet on silk backing.
On a tobacco field, amidst scrolling polychrome floral scrolls emerging from baluster vases, stands a dreamlike décor, with an ivory mihrab door at its center, symbolizing the gateway to paradise, where a weeping willow, symbolizing eternal life, unfurls beneath a hanging oil lamp, two suns (supreme beings) and a lintel with Abjad script. The gateway to paradise is guarded by two dragons/chimeras lounging on limbo. The main arabesque mihrab, with ivory scrollwork vaulting, is supported by two delicate columns, supported by two lions. Two marine counter-borders with garlands of multicolored flowers encircle the main brickwork, interlaced with flowery foliage. Rare, poetic graphics.
