BOISSARD (Jean) - Icones diversorum. Hominum fama et rebus g - Lot 453
BOISSARD (Jean) - Icones diversorum. Hominum fama et rebus gestes illustium. Metz, Abraham Faber, 1591; small quarto, 115 pp. + a handwritten table added by an amateur, bound in 19th-century full glazed calf, spine with 4 raised bands, fillets on covers in imitation of Dusseuil. The text is illustrated with various engravings depicting, at the beginning, outfits from well-known countries or cities: Turkish, Bulgarian, Ravenna, Florence. A beautiful printed page and 53 engravings, the last of which is a portrait of Boissard. A complete copy after Brunet. Boissard was born in Saint Hippolyte into a large family of magistrates. He was first educated at an early age by his uncle Hugues Babet, then continued his studies in Besançon. He then traveled to Germany with his uncle, an itinerant teacher of ancient Greek, where he studied at the universities of Strasbourg, Heidelberg, Cologne and Louvain. It was in Louvain that he left his uncle to settle permanently in Metz, from where he undertook numerous journeys across Europe (Italy, Greece...) to Syria in search of ancient sites, which he drew and reproduced in books.
