CHINA, late 19th CENTURY Midnight-blue silk dress embroidered with polychrome threads, decorated with nine flowery medallions, above foaming waves from which sacred peaks emerge, underlined by ruyi on the lower part and chevrons for the border, and the end of the sleeves. L. 134 cm (Some wear, notably to the neck) Provenance Presumed private collection of Monsieur Auguste Gérard (1852-1922), French ambassador to China (1893-1897) and Japan (1907-1913). Then by descent to the present owner.
