JAPAN, 19th CENTURY Large rectangular hanging, in silk embroidered with polychrome and gilded threads, decorated with alternating panels of pink and blue phoenixes among peonies in bloom. Dim. 200 x 114 cm (Wear, a few tears, especially on the edges, and threads pulled) Provenance Presumed private collection of Monsieur Auguste Gérard (1852-1922), French ambassador to China (1893-1897) and Japan (1907-1913). Then by descent to the present owner.
