Venus Capitoline, green patina bronze representing Aphrodite - Lot 256
Venus Capitoline, green patina bronze representing Aphrodite on a circular base. Southern Italy, Naples, 19th century.
Height : 34 cm
The Aphrodite of the Capitoline Hill or Capitoline Venus is a Hellenistic statuary type representing the goddess Aphrodite, derived from the type of Aphrodite of Knidos created by Praxiteles. The statue is first mentioned by the engraver Pietro Santi Bartoli (1635-1700), who reports that it was discovered in gardens belonging to the Stazi family, near Rome's San Vitale basilica, on the Viminal hill, during the reign of Clement X (1670-1676)1. In 1752, Pope Benedict XIV purchased it from the Stazi family and entrusted it to the Capitoline Museums, where it is installed in a separate niche, called "The Cabinet of Venus", on the second floor of the Palazzo Nuovo on the Capitoline Hill.
