Fernand DUBUIS (1908-1991).Swiss School. Portrait of Andrée DUBUIS. Grease pencil. Signed lower left. Size: 37 x 28 cm.
Fernand Dubuis was born in Sion on April 25, 1908. After a few months at the Ecole de Dessin in Lausanne, he moved to Paris in late 1930 and attended various painting academies (Colarossi, Ranson, Grande Chaumière) until 1933. In 1934, he joined Maurice Denis' studio. He interspersed his Parisian training with study periods in Rome, Florence and Venice. From 1940 to 1945, he lived in Geneva. At the end of the war, he returned to Paris. From 1952, he lived six months a year in Gordes (Vaucluse), which he left only to move into the Château de Tertre in Normandy, owned by Roger Martin du Gard. Initially attracted by Cubism and the theories of Severini, whom he met, he evolved towards a pictorial art where color values alone, without reference to nature, should give life to the painting. He died on September 2, 1991 in Sérigny-Bellême (Normandy).
