Tapestry panel from the Manufacture Royale d'Aubusson, mid-1 - Lot 57
Tapestry panel from the Manufacture Royale d'Aubusson, mid-17th century "Moses and the Hebrews' crossing of the Red Sea". Reynaud Levieux, French painter (1613 - 1694), from a Protestant family, went to Rome in 1640, worked on copies after Raphaël and returned to Nîmes in 1644. Settling in Montpellier in 1649, he helped decorate the Hôtel d'Autheville and executed tapestry cartoons on the theme of the Life of Moses. After settling in Avignon, he painted a Holy Family for the Carthusian monks (Villeneuve-lès-Avignon collegiate church) in 1651, and the Purification of the Virgin (1654) for Notre-Dame-des-Doms. In 1659, he joined the Pénitents noirs brotherhood, for which he painted Deposition of Saint John the Baptist (Musée de Nîmes). He painted numerous pictures for hotels and churches in Avignon, and also worked for churches in Aix-en-Provence. Technical characteristics: Wool and silk. Bearing the "MRD AUBUSSON" mark, belonging to the Life of Moses hanging suite, probably based on cartoons by Reynaud Levieux (1613 - apr. 1694). Dimensions: 283 x 546 cm Very good condition, minor maintenance restorations. Expert : Frank Kassapian ON DESIGNATION
