Venus and Mars. Tapestry panel from Felletin (Creuse region) - Lot 53

Venus and Mars. Tapestry panel from Felletin (Creuse region). Venus, goddess of love, lounging in the shade of a rich hanging, on a sculpted antique table bed, dressed in a bluish toga, converses and compromises with Mars, god of war, scantily clad. Indeed, his military harness is strewn across the floor, shield, cuirass and feathered helmet have been carelessly discarded, while two cherubs are busy removing his sandals, to the sound of a third playing his horn. Cupid, meanwhile, "kindles the fires of love" hidden beneath the drapery of Venus's bed. Blue and pastel border, with garland of flowers and fruit and vases in bloom. Technical features: Wool and silk. Near Aubusson, France, early 17th century. Dimensions : 304 x 295 cm. Good condition, minor maintenance restorations. Expert : Frank Kassapian ON DESIGNATION
