Note from Alexandre Landre:
This drawing was most probably sold at the Duke of Hostun Tallard's sale which took place in 1756. This was one of the very first auctions to have a sale catalog. This sale will lead to the dispersion of works of the greatest painters, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, Correggio, Carracci, Guido Reni, Titian, Veronese, Tintoretto, Rubens, Van Dyck, Rembrandt, Poussin... The collection of the Duke of Hostun Tallard was known to be one of the richest after those of the King and the Duke of Orleans. Our drawing would have been part of lot 470 regrouping "5 drawings including an anatomy sheet". Attributed at the time to Michelangelo, it would have been subsequently in the hands of Baron Henry Oberty de La Morenne whose trace we found in the archives of the castle of Sassenage (receipts of payments made to the creditors of the succession of the Duke of Tallard). The drawing would have been subsequently given to the family of Charles Pardinel by Georgette Catroux in January 1973, probably from the family of René Claude (1874 -1964) and Tristan Catroux known as experts in paintings whose names appear in many sales catalogs of the second half of the twentieth century. We thank Jean-Pierre Ovion, co-author with Michel Bellanger of the book "La Collection duc d'Hostun-Tallard, une passionnante chasse aux trésors des tableaux dispersés en 1756" for giving us access to the digitized archives of the Château de Sassenage.
