Josse DE VOS workshop. Carton after Lambert De Hondt. Flande - Lot 44
Josse DE VOS workshop. Carton after Lambert De Hondt. Flanders, Brussels. Early 18th century, circa 1720.
Le Pillage, Art of War tapestry. Tapestry woven in wool and silk.
The first edition of the Art of War was woven in 1696 by Le Clerc and Van Der Borght for Maximilien-Emmanuel of Bavaria, Governor of the Netherlands. The workshop produced seven more weavings, commissioned by kings, princes and generals, including William III of England and the Duke of Marlborough. The latter then called on De Vos for a weave with personalized variations (preserved at Blenheim). De Vos foresaw the commercial success of this suite and produced several weavings, one of which was acquired by Maximilian-Emmanuel of Bavaria.
This second version of L'Art de la Guerre features thirteen subjects that don't relate specific feats of arms, but show the daily life of soldiers in the field: setting up camp, marching armies, ambushes, plundering populations, etc. This last theme is one of the most important for De Vos. This tapestry relates to the latter theme.
