Otto Van VEEN, Q. Horati Flacci Emblemata. Imaginibus in aes incisis, notisque illustrata. Ex officina Hieronymi Verdussen, Antverpiae (Antwerp), 1607.
One volume in-4 (27.5x20cm), 213p, bound in contemporary vellum.
ORIGINAL EDITION of one of the most famous emblem books of the 17th century. Only edition in Latin (unlike later editions). Illustrated with 103 full-page emblems engraved on copper by Boël, Galle and De Jode, after the originals by van VEEN, and a vignette of Horace on the title page. Work having belonged to the bishop of Poligny Joseph Faton.
First published work of Otto van VEEN (1550-1629), mannerist painter, Flemish art theorist and teacher of RUBENS. Each plate has a maxim in capital letters, followed by a short poetic extract. "This copy was probably offered to Mgr d'Attichy, bishop of Autun (1598-1664), in 1652 (the ex dono has been redacted). It then remained in the convent of the Minimes of Beaune. They translated the mottos which are handwritten at the bottom of the engravings."
Folio 48 misnumbered 84. Several ex-donations on the title and on the title.
