Tapestry from Antwerp (Flanders), wool and... - Lot 10 - Alexandre Landre Semur
Tapestry from Antwerp (Flanders), wool and silk, 17th century Height : 297 ; Width : 303cm In a setting of undergrowth, at the edge of the gardens and basins of a majestic palace and under the gaze of a magnificent peacock, Jupiter, having taken the appearance of Diana, is trying to seduce the nymph Callisto, armed with a bow and quiver. Both are richly draped in togas revealing one of their breasts. The iconography is confirmed by the eagle which is one of the attributes of Jupiter with "the" lightning. Cupid is skeptical about the success of the deception. The side borders are decorated with two caryatids richly flowered representing Jupiter and Callisto or couples of turtledoves. The lower border is dotted with delicate flowers while the upper is decorated with braids of flowers, birds, cherubs and a cartouche, where it is inscribed "JUPITER TRANSFORMATUS" which translates as "The metamorphoses of Jupiter".
