Hans Bellmer (1902-1975) was a German artist best known for his photographs and sculptures of articulated dolls, which he used to explore themes related to the body, desire and the unconscious. Linked to the Surrealist movement, Bellmer challenged aesthetic and social norms through his provocative and often disturbing works. Exiled to France, he influenced many artists and remains a major figure in twentieth-century art.
