Attributed to Jacob Philipp HACKERT (1737-1807) - Lot 47
Attributed to Jacob Philipp HACKERT (1737-1807)
Waterfall landscape and ancient ruin, oil on panel. Size : 40 x 30 cm. Accidents and missing parts on the frame.
Prussian neoclassical landscape painter, Jacob Philipp Hackert went to the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin in 1758. His taste for landscape painting, which was to become his specialty, undoubtedly stems from his enrollment in this discipline at the Academy. He discovered the art of the distinguished landscape painter Claude Joseph Vernet during a trip to Paris from 1765 to 1768, which he began by copying.
After many trips, he settled permanently in Italy, where his career excelled. The consecration comes when he is appointed in Naples in 1786 painter of the court by King Ferdinand IV. Hackert met the intellectuals of the time, notably Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who became a faithful friend and who wrote his biography after his death.
The meticulous representation of nature, which Jacob Philipp Hackert mastered perfectly, is found in our painting, with its high degree of precision and realism. It highlights an ancient ruin, villagers by a waterfall going about their business, all themes dear to our artist. Let us also note the bucolic and poetic character which emerges from the painting.
